Homework Policy
I will follow the school policy and assign homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The assignment(s) should take approximately 40 minutes. In addition to the 40 minutes, each child is asked to read for 20 minutes a night (mandatory), either taking turns with an adult or independently.
The reading time should be logged in on the appropriate form, and initialed by a parent for each entry. If your child needs a lot of assistance from you to complete a task, please write me a short note (or email me) at the top (explaining the difficulties). I have planned homework to be an independent activity to reinforce skills covered in class. You may aid your child, but please let them try by themselves first, and then offer limited assistance. That said, I do request that you review their homework each night and initial agendas.
In fifth-grade students will be preparing for the M.C.A.S. tests in reading, writing, and science, and mathematics. Students are strongly encouraged to buy or make flash cards in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These basic math facts should be studied, memorized, and reviewed regularly for mastery. The website wwww.aaamath.com is also useful in testing yourself for accuracy and speed. Math can be fun, and parents can play math related games with their child to reinforce this. Homework assignments are usually due the next day unless otherwise stated.
Any student who doesn't have a valid reason for not doing the assigned homework will need to sign a "Homework Log". After three missing assignments the log will be sent home to parents as a "Homework Warning" (this should be signed and returned).
