Mr. Dav.'s Independent Passion Project (or I.P.P.)

What is an "Independent Passion Project"?
An Independent Passion Project or I.P.P. is an extra credit enrichment project that is completed by a student or group of students that is completed outside of the school day. Mr. Dav. (the teacher) is responsible for approving the project, helping brainstorm ideas, aiding in the project, and providing an opportunity to present the project to the class.
"Do I have to do this?"
This is a fair question from a student and/or parent. The simple answer is no. It is considered an enrichment activity, and is not a part of the normal school day.
"Will I be graded on my I.P.P.?"
If you decide to complete and present an Independent Passion Project (I.P.P.) you will receive: praise, positive feedback from your teacher and peers, and extra credit towards your report card. Plus... you get the opportunity to learn more about a topic you are passionate about. You will not receive a grade or a score however. The goal is to be creative, and complete the I.P.P. for the love of learning and quest for knowledge.
Why is "Passion" in the title?
Passion means to have strong feelings for someone or something. If you really find a topic interesting, this may be the perfect opportunity to get extra credit for it, and share your passionate interests with others. Knowledge is a gift that needs to be shared!
How much time do I need to commit to an I.P.P.?
Time commitment varies by the student and their project goals. Most I.P.P.s will be completed over a one-month time period. A student should not complete more than one per month, but effort should be put forth to create a quality outcome. A student may decide to do one per year, once a month, or not to complete any.
"What should I choose for a topic?"
My advice is to start brainstorming a list of possible topics that really interest you-- that you are PASSIONATE about. Maybe you know a little about the solar system but want to be a mini-expert. You love technology and want to use it in a project. Math intrigues you and want to focus your energy around a math formula or mathematician. Science is fun and engaging. I have a book of 100 Science Fair Projects that I will let you borrow. Whatever you want to do- make sure your really want to learn more about it. You can understand a topic more clearly and teach others along the journey. An I.P.P. Form needs to be completed by the student and returned to Mr. Dav. for approval. Feedback will be given to tweak the topic if it needs to be revised.
"Do parents have to do this?"
No, parents don't complete the project, but they need to help their child by listening and providing some support. This may mean going to the local library on a Saturday morning to get research materials. Some materials may need to be located if a diorama or crafty project is constructed by your child. The use of a computer with Internet access can be used at home or at the Plumb Corner Library. Money is not needed to create an I.P.P., but time with your child while supporting them in their independent project will be priceless.
"Will I have time in class to work on my I.P.P.?"
Unfortunately we don't have enough time in the day to work on I.P.P.s in the classroom. I can chat with you at lunch or recess to give you some guidance however. If you decide to participate in a team or group project you should make sure you have time after school, on the weekends, or during a vacation to collaborate.
"What do I do with my finished project?"
Please bring your finished Independent Passion Project with you to class. Mr. Dav. will review it with you and schedule a time for you to share your knowledge and project with the class during Morning Meeting sharing time. After sharing you may bring the project home, or display it in the classroom for a while.
"I'm excited about doing an I.P.P.! How do I start the process?"
First fill out the Independent Passion Project Form (I.P.P.F.) and discuss it with your parents. If they are supportive, please pass it into Mr. Davignon for approval.
