Mr. Dav.'s Homework Tips
Agendas
Agendas are required for all fifth-graders, and are an invaluable tool in helping students keep their academic and extra curricular activities organized. Students will be given time each day after lunch to copy their homework assignments off the board, and into their agendas. I am asking for parents to please review the agendas nightly, and initial the bottom of each homework column. Homework is a learning experience, and parents are encouraged to help in this learning process (especially editing written work).
Homework Tips
Many parents ask me how they can help their children manage their time more effectively.
I offer the following suggestions:
• Set a clear time each day/night to work on assignments.
• Provide a quiet area, free from distractions
.• Create a “Study Area” with a special desk, reading lamp etc.
• Have children play before or after homework time, but don’t take frequent breaks to combine them.
• Have children verbalize the assignment for you, to help you and them clarify instructions.
• With many children participating in multiple extra curricular activities, homework must be juggled as a priority. Parents should help youngsters manage their time, so dance lessons, baseball practice, etc. is scheduled along with dinner and homework.
• Don’t put off homework assignments until late at night; children can't put as much effort into their work if they are tired.
• Adult monitored computer time can be very beneficial if educational, kid-friendly websites are used (see computer links from my classroom website for educational games).
• Ask for help if the homework is confusing. Write me a note in their agendas, email me at [email protected] or call me at school 763-2049.
