Write Traits by Great Source
• Reading Street by Scott Foresman
Comprehensive reading program that groups students based on their current ability (assessment based). Groupings are flexible and change due to needs of the students. • Whole group and small group instruction focuses on concept development, listening skills, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and phonics• Grammar skills• Writing short and long compositions based on the Six Traits of Writing • Figurative language• Poetry• Friendly letters• Research reports and note taking• Analytical writing/opinion based/claims/argument
** Grade 5 required reading books (in class): Hatchet, Sign of the Beaver, Fighting Ground, Watsons Go to Birmingham.
Spelling
Students will be engaged in learning a weekly spelling list based on a spelling rule. These words will be generated from the Reading Street Reading Program.
Social Studies
Grade 5 Social Studies covers : Colonial times pre-war, the American Revolution, economic and political conditions during these formative years of a new democracy.
Technology- Google Chromebooks, the Internet, and Google Slideshows will be used daily to supplement our curriculum.
Listening and Speaking: Students will be given opportunities daily for participatory discussion, active listening, engaged note taking, and frequent group/individual formal oral presentations which will be scored.
